How to crochet granny square tote bag | miffy crochet bag

In this pattern you will learn on how to crochet a Miffy granny square tote bag. This pattern is really easy but so repetitive so it will get boring. So I recommend that you watch your fav TV shows and relax while making it. Believe me when I said all the work is WORTH IT! <3

✿ Notes

‣ This pattern uses US terminology.

Weave in any excess yarn or if you’re sewing a lining for it you don’t have to weave it in just make sure all the ends are secured.

‣ Throughout this tutorial I used fake double crochet whenever I mentioned (ch3 or make a fake double crochet). The reason is, fake double crochet provide a cleaner look to the granny square since all stitches looked the same. You can choose whichever method you prefer since fake double crochet is hard for some people.

✿ Materials I used

1. Yarn:

- Cotton yarn 5-ply/ medium weighted yarn. You will need two colours for the granny square so before you start, choose your colour scheme first.

2. Hook:

- 4mm crochet hook

- 3.5mm crochet hook

3. Darning needle

4. Scissors

5. Optional:

- Hot glue gun / any glue

- Felt fabric for the eyes & mouth (you can just yarn to sew on the eyes & mouth if you don’t have felt)

- Ribbon

- Fabric lining

✿ Miffy granny square bag pattern ✿

Part 1: Granny square

IMPORTANT: Mark every 1tr. This will be your 4 corners for the granny square.

Round 1: I used a brown yarn for the granny square. In a magic ring, ch 3 or make a fake double crochet. To make a fake double crochet you can refer to this part of the video (03:40) fake Then, insert 2dc, (1tr, 3dc) x 3, 1tr, sl st

Round 2-4: Ch 3 or make a fake double crochet. Then, insert 1dc in each stitch HOWEVER in the 1tr that you marked, insert a cluster. A cluster means you’re going to insert all the stitches into the same stitch. The stitches that you’re going to insert are (2dc, 1tr, 2dc). Remember to mark the 1tr. Continue this step until the end of the round. Then, sl st into the first stitch.

Continue this step until Round 4.

Round 5: For the border take your other yarn color. I used a white yarn for the border. First, ch 1 and insert 1sc in the same stitch. Then, insert 1sc in each stitch HOWEVER in the 1tr that you marked insert a cluster (sc, hdc, sc). Continue with this step until the end of the round. Then, sl st into the first stitch.

Fasten off.

You will need to make 19 granny squares.

Part 2: Miffy

Head

Round 1: I used a white yarn for the Miffy. In a magic ring, ch 3 or make a fake double crochet. To make a fake double crochet you can refer to this part of the video (03:40) Then, insert 11dc. Finish off with a slip stitch.

Round 2: Ch 3 or make a fake double crochet. Then, insert 1dc into the same stitch. This is going to be your first Inc. Then, continue inserting an Inc in each stitch. Lastly, make a slip stitch and fasten off.

Ears

Round 1: Ch 8, start in the 2nd ch. Make 6hdc in each st. I prefer to insert the hdc into the back bump which you can refer to this part of the video (22:15). This will help minimise the stretch out look whenever you work only in the upper loop of your chain. This part is optional you can do whatever you feel comfortable on doing. Then in the last ch, insert 3hdc. Now, continue on the other side and make 6hdc. Lastly, ch 1 and cut a long end for sewing.

Now repeat this to make 1 pair of ears.

After making all the pieces, you will sew the ears onto the head. For a more detailed explanation I recommend that you watch this part of the video (25:12). Then, you can cut the eyes and mouth using a felt fabric and glue it onto the Miffy using a fabric glue. You can also sew on the eyes and mouth using yarn.

You will need to make 12 Miffys.

After you’re done making all 12 Miffys, go ahead and sew or glue on the Miffys onto the granny square. Make sure you sew or glue it onto the right side of the granny square.

The total of pieces that you should have by now is 12 granny squares with Miffy and 7 plain granny square.

Part 3: Sewing

Before sewing, I suggest that you block all the granny squares to make sure the shape is right. If you don’t know how to block the granny square you can watch it at this time stamp (28:25). Now all you need to do is sew all the pieces together just like above. The picture above is a reference on each pieces that you should have after you sewed it all together. You will sew the pieces using an invisible join. I showed step-by-step tutorial on how to sew them at (29:05).

Once you have all the pieces, all you need to do is sew all of them in this order.
Front - Side - Back - Side. Lastly, sew the bottom piece to the body.

Part 3: Top border

I used white yarn for the border.
Round 1: Ch 2 at any top stitch. Then, insert 1dc in the same stitch. Next, insert 1sc each stitch until the end of this round. Finish off with sl st.

Round 2: In this round, you will start making the strap. Using a stitch markers, mark where you want your strap to be. There will be a total of 4 stitch markers on your bag.

Ch 1 and insert 1sc in the same stitch. Then, insert 1sc in each stitch and stop until you reach the first stitch marker. Then, chain how long you want your strap to be (I did 85 chains). Next, insert 1sc in the next stitch marker and continue inserting 1sc in each stitch until you reach the next stitch marker at the back. Continue chaining the same number of chains that you did then insert 1sc in the next stitch marker. Lastly, insert 1sc in each stitch until the end of this round. Finish this round by making a sl st. For a visual reference this is the time stamp on the youtube video (37:43).

Round 3 - until your desired thickness: Ch 1 and insert 1sc in the same stitch. Then, insert 1sc in each stitch until the end of this round (you will insert 1sc in the chains that you did too). Finish off with a sl st.

Fyi, I did this step for 3 rounds. So I stop making 1sc on round 5.

Once you have your desired thickness for the border, go ahead and fasten off.

You’re done with the bag! I recommend that you sew a fabric lining for the bag just to keep it from stretching!! <3 I hope the tutorial has been helpful for you and see you around friends ~
